Its been over a year since I wrote anything on the blog so forgive me...but I needed a place to write about how the NFL has set up the Steelers to lose in Denver this weekend.

Hold your pants on.

I'm not saying they WILL lose...just that this is the perfect storm for the league to make a point and a whole lot of money.

Just thinking about it makes me kind of sick.

Here we have an aggressive, pursuing defense that hits hard...and has already had players fined and suspended for hitting a QB (who was running out of the pocket) vs a team with a QB who LOVES to run.

What happens if the defense isn't as aggressive? What if they pull up instead of going for the hit on one of those read options Tebow likes to run?

I can almost guarantee there will be two or more roughing the QB or personal foul penalties against the Steelers in this game. And that could extend drives and lead to scores. Or at least swing the field position in a game where you have a gimpy QB and having a short field would be very beneficial.

Now even if you think (as many people do) that a few of the fines James Harrison has received are for bogus hits the fact remains that one questionable call (like the one against London Fletcher on Tom Brady a couple weeks ago) could not only affect the game, but affect Harrison playing the following week (assuming a win in Denver).

This could also go the other way and show how certain QB's *cough*AaronRodgers*cough* get better treatment from the refs than other ones and NOTHING gets called.

You never know with an NFL ref. Each crew seems to understand the rules differently.

The Steelers SHOULD win. They are a veteran defense and they should stay in their lanes and keep Tebow boxed in where he will be forced to *throw* the ball. If that's what you call it.

But if the unthinkable happens just remember who to thank.

Here's the Friday Five!

Yes, I know its Saturday night...I was busy! Heck I haven't even had time to decide what I'm going to start calling the blog now that I've already turned 40!

I had heard that it was homecoming week at WVU this weekend and it got me thinking about songs that are associated with the local sports teams.

West Virginia, for example, has adopted this song from John Denver as their theme over the years.

Much closer to home The University of Pittsburgh also had their homecoming this weekend. I had to reach out to an old friend and ask if there was a song they used to get the fans up or something they called their own....and he came through for me!

(And kudos to the guy who did that video!)

Once you get to the pro teams its a lot easier!

Starting with the Pirates...yes they are pros...its hard to believe its been 30 years since Pittsburgh won a World Series. OK, not that hard to believe. But back then there was a real family feel between the team and the city.

(By the way...best use of this song since 1979? Right here!)

Onward and upward and I'm not sure the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, your Pittsburgh Penguins, still use this song as Gary Glitter ran into a little bit of trouble in the recent past.

And of course there is the six-time and current Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers with their 4th quarter anthem!

Here is your Friday Five...five videos with a particular theme!

I started this list a while back after hearing a song that struck me as odd.

Here are (at least) five songs about jailbait.

I just can't imagine where musicians get such a bad rap!

These were just the songs that I knew of off the top of my head...a quick search came up with many, MANY more!

Obviously these are in no certain order.

Is it ironic that a group calling themselves the Police had a huge hit about a teacher lusting for his student?

Nice try Winger, but 17 is still 17. Even if she above the age of consent...we know what you mean!

The 60's were a simpler time of love and peace and chasing young chicks in mini-skirts.

Even the Beatles were not above interest in a younger girl.

And you would think the groups would keep from ANNOUNCING the age of the girl they would be arrested for stalking!

And a bonus track...just to prove the members of the Beatles never changed. (Even if it mean remaking a jailbait song!)

So there you have it. Although there were a few songs about women chasing underage guys these seemed a little, well, creepier!

A couple weeks ago I said I was going to start a Friday night music blog.

Naturally I've been busy the past couple weeks and didn't do it...so here's the Saturday morning version!

Jim Morrison, lead singer of the doors allegedly died while in Paris on July 3, 1971. I say allegedly because there are those who still believe he faked his own death.

In fact you can see a picture of his "ghost" here.

More recently, and you may have missed this, Michael Jackson died.

And yes, there are those who say he faked his death.

Here's an oldie but a goodie.

I actually found people who think that Glenn Miller faked his death while performing during WW II! Presumably because his body was never recovered...

Then there was Kurt Cobain. Who supposedly took his own life because of the strain on him being successful. Isn't it wonderful that people can waste valuable band width with their conspiracy websites?

Naturally we have Elvis Aaron Presley. There are enough conspiracy theories about his death to write a book...or several of them.

Clearly he was in a good state of mind...lol.

Thinking about you...

This is another repost. Oringinally it was posted on my My Space blog on May 15, 2007.

I reposted it on my personal space the next year.

I may even have posted it here on this blog, but I don't feel like looking through the previous 139 posts to find out!

So, since we are approaching the big day in less than two weeks I wanted to post it anyway.

The complete history of 3^rd Try Productions.

From time to time I am asked where the name "3^rd Try Productions" came from, and as I do love to tell a story (usually a long, convoluted, boring story) I have decided to finally sit down and put it all in writing, because obviously this is the single most important thing anyone could care about…right?

Around 1981 or 1982 I heard my first Weird Al Yankovic song on the radio. We were sitting in the car waiting for my mother to come out from getting her hair done and KDKA, Pittsburgh, played "Another One Rides the Bus". Instantly the crazy spark in me was ignited! Not long after I heard a little ditty called "Shaddup a you face" by Joe Dolce and I knew what I wanted to do with my life! LOL! I bought Al's first LP (ahhh…vinyl) and my love of all things weird took off from there.

By the next year I was staying up until midnight on Sundays to not only listen to, but to record on 90 minute cassette tapes, The Dr. Demento Show! Two hours of the strangest, greatest music I had ever heard!

When I started high school I was a bit shy and the way I was trying to come out of my shell was writing these silly song parodies like Weird Al did. Of course you had to have a band name to do that so I, along with another freshman (who will remain nameless for two reasons: 1) He probably doesn't remember it at all and 2) He works for the government now!) started The Fools, complete with a backward "S" to make us even sillier. (Give me a break we were 13 years old!) Unfortunately, that year there was a one-hit wonder group that called themselves"The Fools" that had a moderate hit with a remake of Do-Wa-Diddy" so that name had to go. (btw: Thank goodness for the internet! I can't believe they have their own website!)

The next clever little name we came up with was "The Flip-Sides" (this time with 2 backward "S"'s!) Unfortunately a female friend, who had seen the horrible stuff we were writing, told me there was a Saturday morning show running where the stars would go through a magic mirror to "the flip side" and I decided that was close enough to call for another name change…and this time I had a brain storm! Rather than trying to come up with clever names every year I would call the band "3^rd Try", then if someone took that name I'd go with "4^th Try", "5^th Try" and so on! Brilliant! Of course no one ever took that name so it stuck!

Gradually I realized I was NOT going to make a career out of being weird, but the weird songs kept creeping into my head! I've tried to explain to my wife and friends that I just hear things differently then other people. When I heard Gretchen Wilson's "Here for the Party" for the first time, in my head I heard "Here for the Buffet"…it's just the way it goes! So I kept writing my little songs and gradually got into writing little comedy bits in the styling of the people I had been stealing material from for the previous four years: Benny Hill, Dave Allen, Kenney Everett,Monty Python, etc. See, I must have been the only guy watching WQED or WPGH late at night hoping to see these old English comedians! So I would copy their jokes, Americanize them, and take them to school with me the next day!

All of this led up to my starting college. Any progress I had made with my personality was immediately lost during this time! Years of getting by on memory alone did me no good in a situation where you actually had to work…and study! Freshman year was a nightmare of struggling with classes and trying to find any kind of niche where I could fit in.

Originally I was going to school to be an accountant.

Two things were working against me:

1) I found the workSO INCREDIBLY BORING that I couldn't concentrate enough to learn anything. I mean my accounting class (at 8:30am every Tuesday and Thursday) was led by a guy who was a whiz at law…but couldn't add! He would be at the board and add 2+2 and get 5!

2) That weird part of brain refused to go away. So by the middle of my second semester I had decided to change majors. By this time I somehow found people who were snowed enough to my "friends" and one invited me to a pizza party that was being held by the Communication Program on campus. Now this program was so small it was not even its own department on campus. The department head was actually at our sister college. The man who ran the program, Fr. Andrew Campbell, was so great I knew I had to try it.

I had always had an inclination that radio would be fun, so I chose to follow the mass media path though the program. Sophomore year I started a show with one of my friends called "The Midnight Special" and from10:00pm-12:00am every Wednesday we spun records and tried to be entertaining…emphasis on "tried". We sucked! LOL! But it was the beginning of a love affair with radio that lives in me today. Given the opportunity I would be on the air right now…which is why I love posting all the old stuff I still have, but I'll get to that later.

The songs kept coming to me and gradually "3^rd Try" the group evolved into "3^rd Try Productions" covering all the media I was producing including the radio show. Other items fell under the 3^rd Try banner also including the heavy metal group: Dead Silence. Dead Silence had seven albums, a greatest hits and a Christmas album. Hits included: "That Woman's a Nun", "Too Short for Sex" and "Get off my Crutch". The hook? Dead Silence was exactly that. Not a note was played, not a word was sung. The only thing we came up with was titles.

Also by senior year we were making our own television show! Fr. Andrew had hired me to be his assistant during the school year and that gave me a key and access to the television studio (such as it was) whenever I wanted. There was a lip-sync contest on campus twice a year. I videotaped one and was deluged with request for copies. Rather than make 100 copies I announced that we would replay the tape on WSVC Channel 30, the closed circuit channel on campus. We even broke the videos up and "hosted" the replay! When I say "we" it was me as the host and my good friend Greg as he producer. And when I say "producer" I mean we set up one camera in the studio and did everything live! A copy of that first show exists, but I refuse to let anyone see it!

Also this is where the name "The Glenn" comes from. Fr. Andrew said I did such a wonderful job that from that point forward anyone who filled that position would be called "The Glenn". I assume he had other favorites after that as I have seen other graduates from SVC's communication program with similar nicknames!

We called the show "You Did It" and it was one of two regular broadcasts on channel 30. The other, "The Flying Zambruno Show", I unfortunately do not have any copies of as I was not part of that show. Somehow I got convinced that "You Did It" could be done on a regular basis. So along with taking 15 credits, working 30 hours a week on campus, and starting my internship, I was going to create and produce a television show once a week? Sure! Why not! With the help of several friends we developed a simple game plan: Each week there would be a different host, chosen from the students on campus. The hosts picked their own theme music. We did all the stuff that would be on the show and ran the cameras, etc. Each week there were different segments…some were pretty funny, some just plain sucked…but we had a blast most of the time anyway.

By the fourth show I was completely burned out from all the editing and pressure of getting this on the air every week, so we blew off a show but came back a few more episodes…most of which I started to make available on line just to entertain myself and the few people who worked on it!

So since we were now doing records, radio and television I decided that "3^rd Try Productions" would be the umbrella to cover all of these various enterprises. Hell(rais)er Video did all the television stuff for example and everything was a © of 3^rd Try Productions.

After college I got a job full-time in radio and all the bits and lists and funny stuff in my head had the opportunity to come flowing out. Four years after that I was out of radio and had no outlet for that creativity…but marriage, two kids and a few jobs later I can use all this wonderful new technology to be creative again to a wider audience than my loving and patient wife who I cannot thank enough for being my audience of one for all these years!

In 1996 my wife and I got our first computer and I got online for the first time also. When we set up our first email account I used 3^rd Try Productions as the name because I figured that if by that time no one had taken it that I needed something to prove it was mine! And since then from YouTube to wedding video production I have continued to expand the usage.

So there you have it.

The ramblings of a mad man…er, I mean the history of 3^rd Try Productions up until this point in time, May 15^th, 2007. Hopefully I can create more stuff in the future…heck, maybe even make money off it! Either way I feel better now, don't you?

I want your sex...

So David Letterman has announced that he was being blackmailed by a fellow employee who knew he had sex with some of the people he worked with.

Naturally the 24 hour news-heads have focused on the heart of this story: sex.

Or at least that would be all they want to talk about.

There is SO much more they could be talking about:

1) A guy decided to write a SCRIPT about the affairs! What happened to good old fashioned blackmail?

2) Couldn't he have written a book and made the money legitimately?

3) Why did his ex keep a diary of her sexual exploits? Was she like Drew Barrymore's character in "50 first Dates"?

4) Why hasn't Glenn Beck cried about it yet.

Sorry...back to point.

It amazes me that people in this country are still so fascinated with sex.

Its so taboo that when someone famous comes out and says he was having sex...THAT is the story?

I'll let you in on a little secret: LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE SEX EVERY DAY!

Someone them aren't even married!

Horror of horrors!

Whether I think it was right or not, apparently the sexual relations that Letterman had were consensual and with other adults. So that is not an issue for me.

He has deal with his wife and whatever pain this has brought to his marriage and family.

Beyond that I'm more interested in the lowlife who tried to make money off of it.

I'm glad Letterman came out and said this is what happened...its over. He got the word out before the tabloids could and good for him!

Now its time for the rest of America to grow up and stop giggling every time someone says a dirty word.

I-95

So why are most managers assholes?

Are their bosses assholes so they feel like they have to "pay it forward"?

Or do they think if they are big enough jerks they'll get promoted and be able to be jerks to more people?

So what brought this thought on was I stopped at Sheetz last night for a soda.

Now I don't think most of the people working at a Sheetz on the night shift are looking to move up the corporate ladder there. I'm not saying they aren't hard working, honest people. But I bet if they could find a good paying job elsewhere they'd jump at it.

Anyway, there are two people working at 7pm. One guy making the food and one girl working the counter. They were probably both in their late teens or early 20's.

There were about four or five people in the line checking out and I was at the end of the line.

From behind me I heard the unmistakable voice of a woman who has made poor career choices her entire life.

She was yelling at the girl working the cash register and asking why there was only one decaf coffee made.

There must be two at all times!

While still checking out the line of customer, making change, bagging items...the girl responded that she wasn't sure why since she did not remove the other pot.

Not satisfied our decaf dictator continues to inform the younger girl of the appropriate supply of pseudo-fresh decaf that must be available according to the Sheetz handbook of all things super important.

Our check out person was visibly nervous and I wondered if she was even giving out the right change anymore at this point.

Luckily for her our chief or coffee turned her attention to the young man cooking. Demanding he drop everything and get her a decaf pot...STAT!

At that point I checked out and left...shaking my head.

I've worked for quite a few good and bad bosses in my day.

I've learned that you have to be tough sometimes, but situations dictate your response and how you handle your employees.

Hopefully these two kids learn fro the psycho and someday get the chance to treat employees better.

Of course they'll probably turn out to be assholes and take out their bad memories on a whole new bunch of kids.

Where the heck has a year gone?!?!

When I started this little blog with the intention of writing something every day for one year I did understand the immensity of that task!

So now, with less than a month left until the year is up I need to make an effort to at least post more regularly!

As part of that I'm going to start the Friday night music scene. A selection of videos that may have nothing in common other than I got a kick out of them!

I do something similar every day on facebook with my mid-day musical interlude...a song (or two) every day that can break up the monotony!

Where were you?

Since I'm sure everyone else in the world has done this…

September 11^th, 2001 started off as normal for me as did for everyone else in the country save the hijackers. I got up, dropped the kids off at their respective places and went to work.

At that time I was working out of a smaller office than I have now and the way it was situated in our building I got very poor radio reception. I had a small boom box on the floor of my office just to have some sound in the room and every day the first thing I turned on in the morning was that radio. It really only got a couple stations. I like to listen to AM radio in general and talk radio in particular. Too many years in radio has turned me off from listening to music and the all-sound-alike DJ's that permeate the airwaves. Since I could not get AM in my office I usually had the local (and closest) FM station on just for background noise. The day before, however, I had switched to the oldies station in Pittsburgh (94.5 WWSW).

On 9/11/2001 I didn't turn the radio on.

I have no idea why. I wasn't any busier than normal. I didn't do anything to change my normal routine (thank you OCD!) or have anything interrupt my morning.

I just didn't turn the radio on.

I remember quite clearly that we had a flatbed truck to load that day with product being shipped out. I was in and out of the building checking on the tires we were shipping and it was a simply beautiful day. Clear blue skies, cool temperatures, no humidity. You could not have asked for a better day.

At one point our secretary told me as I walked into the front office that her sister had told her a plane hit of the world trade center buildings and I shrugged it off. I knew planes had hit the Empire State building before so it always possible.

Then she said her sister (who was at home watching television) called and said another plane had hit the tower and the news was saying we were under attack!

Surprised, I flipped on my radio and heard ABC news pouring out. I've been into radio for a long time…major music stations don't play the national news feed after 9am if they do it at all anymore.

This was big.

I jumped on the computer and found that all of the major news sites were jammed. I was able to get on the Japanese CNN site and see some images and print some pictures to show the guys at work.

Our boss, the owner, was outside with the truck being loaded. When I went out next I told him what was going on and he seemed more interested in getting the truck loaded! LOL! I knew he cared, but business had to go on no matter what.

All I wanted to do was to go home and watch the news, but that wasn't an option. I listened to the radio all day and all the rumors that were out there too.

At one point it was reported that one of the hijacked planes was in Fayette County airspace. We had a rouge county commissioner who loved to hear his own voice on television and radio who announced that to the world. People were calling our office because we are near the county airport. Not surprisingly we were not a target, but the plane (Flight 93) did apparently pass through the airspace as it was heading to turn around before it crashed.

Heading home that evening I was struck by the fact that there were no planes in the sky.

Obviously I had heard that all flights were grounded, but where I live we have a great view of the southern sky and to see ZERO planes all night was a bit disconcerting.

My wife was two months pregnant with our son at that time, and after consuming as much television as humanly possible I went to bed that night with my wife and wondered out loud what kind of world we were bringing another baby into.

In the aftermath I fully supported our attacking the Taliban in Afghanistan…but argued strongly against invading Iraq. I still hold those two views to this day.

Six years later I still wonder what kind of world we brought our son into, but I hope that the majority of us are trying to make it a better place.

Here We Go!

I put it off long enough.

Every year I dread this, but I HAVE to do it.

Please forgive me..

Here is my Pittsburgh Steelers Preview for the season!

Offense:
Of course the question is whether Ben can recover from the horrible season he had last year...wait, no. The question is whether he'll LIVE through the season because of the offensive line.

The short answer is Yes.

You don't need the long answer, but to sum up the line will be better. They will have had the advantage of playing to together for another year and they will feed off the success they had in the playoffs.

Ben is Ben (to quote Coach Tomlin) and will do what he does. No worries.

Parker is in a contract season and has something to prove. Mendenhall wants to show that he's no bust.

Ward and Holmes are stars and watch for Sweed and Wallace will stretch the field like we have seen in this town in a long time.

Defense:

Is this really a question? Injuries aside they should dominate much the same way they did last year.

If I have to pick on one thing its that the defensive line is still getting older, but Big Snack Hampton is also in a contract year and should continue to dominate and Ziggy is gonna get some looks too.

Special Teams:

Another player in a contract year and one of the most consistent players in the Steelers organization is Jeff Reed. He'll be fine and he'll be here next year too.

Sepulveda is healthy so fans don't have to hold their breath and cross their fingers every time the Steelers have to punt.

And you may have heard that they signed Stefan Logan:

So while anything can happen look for another great year. The schedule is easier than the famous "toughest schedule in the history of the NFL" from last year too.

But remember no matter what happens week to week the goal is to make the playoffs and then to get to the Super Bowl and then to win it all.

That never changes and I don't expect the Steelers chances to change either!

Goodbye Is The Saddest Word...

Alma "Dean" (LaBorde) Heller passed away at 9:03 pm on July 1, 2009.

She was born October 16, 1925 the youngest of eight children to Frank Lewis LaBorde and Emma Clida (Uplinger) LaBorde.

She was married to Glenn Sterling Heller on April 8, 1944 and together they had five children: Jack S. born 1/17/1945; Kenneth W. born 4/19/1947; Glenn S. Jr. "Skip" born 5/17/1950; David W. born 8/6/1951; Naomi "Jeanie" born 8/9/1952.

She was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in April, 1966, and by her siblings: Nellie, Lewis, Cora, Gertrude, Helen, Richard and Francis.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Caruso funeral home in Mt. Pleasant with internment to follow at Green Ridge Cemetery on Sunday, July 5th, 2009.

That's about what the formal obituary will look like.

But that doesn't tell you about my grandmother.

She was a woman who lived life to fullest. She was loud and wore the clothes (and earrings) to match that attitude.

She didn't really care what people thought of her or what she said...but she was not mean, just opinionated.

She loved her family and they loved her for being who she was.

Until the last few years of her life she drove herself to any bingo game she could get in on.

She loved playing cards and spent many times teaching her grandchildren a new game...and taking their pennies whenever she could!

She was the last tie to another generation for our family...and that is something that can never be replaced.

She will be missed, but we all know she is somewhere better right now...probably trying to pennies from her relatives at a game of cards.

Talking in your sleep

Stupid dog.

Not really, but what a night.

Priscilla (Prissy) our 12 1/2 year old Jack Russel/Beagle mix has this sinus problem thing that has her sounding like a 95 year old man every night.

So we are awakened to various snorts and snores and coughs and hacks every night.

THIS particular night I was woken up at 3:30am...and am STILL up.

So enjoy this little video of some of her sounds.

These are nowhere NEAR the worst. She clams up every time I turn the camera on her! LOL!

Going to the Chapel

Its summer, we've been running around a lot and I haven't felt like writing much.

But today I wanted to wish my parents a happy 41st anniversary!

Time to take up arms...or at least phones and emails.

Our beloved Governor of Philadelphia, er, Pennsylvania, "Fast Eddie" Rendell is proposing a 16% increase in the the personal income tax.

Exactly what I thought.

The entire state legislature can go screw themselves if they think they are getting one more red dime from me.

Its time for them to make do with what they have.

I can't just go ask for more money when times are tough..I have to drop things and tighten my belt.

They can do the same or they can go to hell...really I could care less.

And no one give me any crap about the services that will need to be cut. There are plenty of pleaces to make cuts that will not make children starve or streets go unpaved. Its not like their doing such a bang up job NOW with all the money they have!

Honest to God I think there should be an IQ test that anyone has to at least pass to run for office!

So let your voice be heard. I will be doing the same thing you can rest assured on that!

Oh, and its a big election year too...so lets remind these kind fellow and ladies that we can just as easily find someone who will do their jobs the way we like.

I wasn't going to pick up Detroit fans.

I was going to take the high road and just enjoy the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup.

I mean isn't it bad enough for them that their beloved team dropped four of the last five games of the series?

But then I read a post by this d-bag.

Seems he has a problem with Bettman wanting Crosby to win.

His proof?

Bettman was smiling too much while handing Crosby the cup.

Yes, you read that right...Bettman "SMILED" too much.

Meanwhile he's proclaiming that he doesn't believe there was a conspiracy...Bettman just got what he wanted.

Um, WHAT?!?!

Here, for the sake of argument is LAST year's handing of the cup.

My God!

If Bettman was smiling too much this year what do you call LAST year!?!?!?

He's even showing his teeth!

Maybe he was secretly growling at Detroit winning?

So, despite my best intentions...SHUT UP EVERY FAN IN DETROIT WHO THINKS THE FINALS WERE FIXED! YOUR TEAM HAD TWO CHANCES TO WIN THE CUP (GAME SIX AND SEVEN) AND DID NOT FINISH THE JOB!

You may go back to your regularly scheduled summer of proclaiming how the Wings will win the cup next season because they are the best team since the discovery of ice.

Or throwing rocks at people driving foreign cars.

Whatever it is you do while jerking off to Journey songs.

Pomp and Circumstance

Its the end of May and so graduation has been on my mind lately.

Its been one year since my wife graduated from college. Hard to believe!

She went back to school, signing up for classes in 2001, to get a degree that she always wanted. She also got pregnant with Josh that same Fall! So while it took longer than four years, Michelle graduated with her Bachelors in 2008 and we are all so proud of her!

I graduated from St. Vincent College in Latrobe in 1991! It doesn't seem that long ago!

For the longest time I thought I would go in to law. Courtrooms always fascinated me and I was blessed with a gift for gab that I thought would be put to good use in situations like that! But when I declared my major I went in to accounting.

That lasted one semester!

About half-way through I realized that the gentleman teaching me accounting 101 could not add. He was a whiz at law, but even at 8:00 am it was pretty obvious that I didn't want to do this for a living.

To be fair it wasn't all that one teacher's fault. I had a heck of a time adjusting to college. I never had to study in High School so college was a big surprise. You actually had to DO work...not just give back to the teacher what they told you!

So by the middle of the semester I was ready to change majors and stopped going to my accounting class...except for the tests...which I failed miserably! LOL!

That was the one and only time I ever failed a class on any level!

So with no idea what I wanted to do a friend invited me to meet the head of the Communication department, Fr. Andrew Campbell.

There was a pizza party (and what college freshman is going to pass up free pizza?) in what passed as the television studio on campus. What it really was was a large white room in the basement of one of the dorms. They had two cameras and an old switcher and some VHS tape machines. (This was 1988 remember.)

I fell in love with the place instantly!

The next year I was knee deep in speech classes and mass media classes. I started hosting a radio show (which could only be heard on campus...and then just barely) one night a week.

By my Junior year I was working for Fr. Andrew and heading the Radio Club.

Senior year we were producing a weekly television show, hosting the radio show once a week, video taping the events on campus and handling the in-campus television station.

Needless to say I was in heaven!

Graduation came too fast senior year. That last semester was the exact opposite of my first one. I was taking only two classes (both lower level ones needed to fill requirements) and had three independent studies with Fr. Andrew. Basically I had to do my job and turn some papers in!

We had a blast that year!

But all good things must come to an end and graduation brought that great big dose of reality that we all get at some point in our lives.

I was working three jobs...two different radio stations that each had an AM and FM location, plus for my Dad...dating a girl from college and generally running all the time.

A year or so later I had one job and no girlfriend and lots of free time!

But I digress.

I doubt I'll ever be asked to speak at any commencement ceremonies so here is what I would tell any graduates if I had the chance:

Do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do.

You to get live your life only once, but you can change your path at any time.

No one gets everything right the first time...or every time. Mistakes are part of life and if you think you don't make them then you aren't trying hard enough!

Stop sometimes and look at where you are and remember where you came from. Those two things are more important then where you think you are going.

Material things are just that...things. Things can be replaced. Don't hold on to tightly to things that are dear to you. Hold on to the people who hold you dear.

And remember that its OK to stand up for what you believe in, but also remember that someone else may disagree just as strongly with you...and they think its OK to stand up for what they believe in too.

Man...been awhile since I posted a blog and I apologize! Life has a way of doing that to you, but I have a bunch of stuff so look fore more frequent updates again!

Today I wanted to talk about Tom Brady who says he is healthy and ready to play football again after a season ending injury in game one last year.

Well, who gives a rat's ass?

I mean we're talking about ONE player injured in the NFL.

A man* who plays for a known cheater and philanderer.

A guy who got one woman pregnant...and then married another.

A guy who's stats suddenly got inflated when one of the greatest receivers (when he feels like it) joined his team. Hell, Randy Moss can make ANY QB look good!

So he says he's ready to play.

Whoo hoo.

Listen to me NFL...the fans of the OTHER teams get tired of the ass-kissing of Tom Brady (although I'm sure he doesn't).

Mr. Brady is another player who played on a good team and in a smart system. He was part of three teams that won Super Bowls (thanks to one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history as much as Tom.)

I don't want to see anyone injured for life...but please...he had the best docotrs and round the clock care. He didn't have to worry about where he next check was coming from or if he could afford to feed his family (or families as it is).

He's another over-paid athlete that has been deified by a star-worshiping media.

So lets kock the crap off now and no one will get hurt.

Fat

Kind of a bunch of inter-related thoughts this morning so bear with me.

My brother in law got to come home this past Saturday. While he's not up to 100% yet and is still dealing with doctor visits and getting healthy it will probably do him good to just be at home instead of in a hospital bed.

As I've posted before we started a group for him over on Facebook with the intention of getting lots of prayers and support for him and my sister in law. Another reason was to try and get some help for them both with the house they are building and with what will surely be large bills from the amount of medicine he is to be on.

I had the bright idea of having a weight loss marathon to raise money.

It made sense to me on every level:

Since his problem was a fatty liver it would do some of us good to look at losing some weight ourselves.
Its the kind of thing that while raiding money also makes the people participating feel good about themselves.
I needed to lose some weight and with an actual goal and some motivation I think I can do it this time for good.

So I went to my doctor to get an official weight to start from.

That's all I wanted.

Instead I got a full check up since I had not been there in almost two years.

Mistake!

My blood pressure was up, my weight was up.

Now I'm used to the doctor yelling at me about my weight. I fluctuate a good bit and have been well over my average weight for almost ten years now, but this time she was serious.

Get the weight off and get my blood pressure down or its on blood pressure medicine.

For the record I take no medicine at all. My blood work has always been stellar despite my poor health habits.

So I am exercising every morning, eating five small meals rather than three big ones and watching my calorie intake.

But I haven't started the marathon yet! So I wanted to throw the idea out there and see who else wants to participate.

My idea would be to get sponsors per pound or as a flat donation. You would have to give an official start weight and then an end weight and we could set up an account for Jimmy for his medical needs.

I thought about calling it "Losing it for Jimmy" but I'm always open to ideas!

I woke up this morning and had a great idea for a new blog!

Problem is the only thing I could remember by the time I sat down to write it was the title.

I have no idea where I was headed with it either.

Sad.

So I figured since I haven't written about my life in a while I would do it now!

Nothing really new to report. those of you who are my friends on Face Book know what has been happening with my brother-in-law being in the hospital and all.

If you don't know, he's been in the hospital for that last two plus weeks with a diseased liver and bleeding esophagus. He is currently in rehab and getting ready to come home.

Things like that make you question your own health and situation.

In fact, as a fund raiser for him and his wife I have considered doing a sponsored weight loss-a-thon. It would be good for them and could only be good for me too!

But if I really do that I'll make a big announcement.

I really wish I could remember why I wanted to call this blog "Opposites Attract"!

So where was I?

Oh yea, me.

Its really no different than when I started this blog last October...I'm just one of those people who goes with the flow.

I get mad...then I get over it.

I laugh as often as I can.

I am of two minds about almost everything (Libra) and try to see all sides of a story before passing judgement.

What the heck does that have to do with anything?

Why am I still writing if I can't remember what I was going to write about?

I think I'll have to work up a hockey blog now.

Meanwhile the economy is still in shambles, there are still TWO wars we are fighting, and Asston Kutcher is twittering to one million people! (Yes, I know I spelled that wrong.)

Step one for any good revolution? Control the media.

The media in this country force feeds us enough sugar that everything else tastes good.

So while its nice to have a little diversion every now and again. You must remember moderation is the key.

So stop with the Susan Boyle fan clubs and the adoration.

She has a good voice.

She is not solving any of the worlds problems.

Its the first few days of Spring!

Some say the first Blue Jay, or the first Redbird is their sign of Spring.

Mine was finding an empty beer bottle on the table on our deck!

That meant we were starting to use the deck again! LOL!

Others also try to balance an egg on end during the equinox.

I've said before that one of the joys of living is Southwest PA is having all four defined season.

So as we walked outside this morning I was renewed myself as I saw all the birds and the buds on the trees.

Weather permitting I encourage everyone to head out and take a breath of fresh air this weekend...and take some time reflect on the change in the seasons and the renewal of life.

There is always hope.

No matter how dark and long the night seems, daylight will come eventually.

Well, until the sun burns out...but you get my point!

Video Killed the Radio Star

We kicked off the show with another classic! "Ain't No Crime" by billy Joel and featured on the Piano Man album!

As usual the conversation flowed from Facebook and the new changes in the homepages to the Penguins and I bored Jeff to sleep while ranting about Glenn Beck and politics in general!

We had a brand new Top 9 list...which turned in to a top 8 when I found I I used the same one twice! (Darn editors!)

"People I Hate" returned and this week Brad Jolie, sorry...Pitt was the guest of honor!

Also we had a call from a young lady who is promoting Congenital Heart Defect Awareness. Her two-year old son has already had several operations and she will be calling back in the future to tell her story!

So I heard today that Paul Harvey died.

So time for my Paul Harvey stories:

I was forced to listen to his drivel for well over a year as I hosted a radio program in the mid 90's.

At some point I realized that his "News and Comment" was more comment than news so I started calling it "News and Rumor".

Yes, I got told to stop that by the station.

So then our news man Norm (RIP) starts a story about Paul being a cross dresser and how it was widely known but the mainstream media would never talk about it.

We even went as far as to say how it probably allowed a bunch of mid-western conservatives feel open enough to admit their own cross-dressing.

Kind of an inside joke but it amused us...lol.

Anyway, he's gone now and I attemtpt to not speak ill of the dead so that wil be that.

Eye of the Tiger

Would someone please explain to me the lure of Tiger Woods?

I understand he plays a great game of golf...but this deifying him is a bit much.

I wrote about this before in a blog on Myspace.

But now that he is making his miracle comeback the slurping at the alter of Tiger has gotten worse.

Let's get the facts. The guy had a hairline fracture (we're told) and had some knee work done. Then, because he can afford it, he took nine months or so off to recover with the best doctors and therapy you can buy.

Now he says he is ready to go back to hitting a little white ball and walking around for a few hours?

And we celebrate that?

Anquan Boldin had to have screws and a plate put in his face after a hit on the football field and was back in two weeks!

I have a guy at work who (for less than $15.00 an hour) is upset that he has to take time off for shoulder surgery. He hurt it actually working. He's looking at a minimum of 6-10 weeks off and he's spitting nails about wanting to come back as soon as possible.

But Tiger is an amazing story?

Please.

The fools who run the PGA have no one to blame but themselves.

Tiger is an amazing golfer, but that story writes itself. If they had any sense they would have been pushing the fringe players too. Get the everyman story out there.

But no...they only saw the dollar signs from Tiger and when he took his nearly a year off for his miraculous recovery they we left with nothing to promote...except when Tiger would come back.

So they made their bed...I'm no more interested in golf whether Eldrick is playing or not.

But please don't give me the amazing comeback stories anymore.

So I've slacked and not updated in a couple days...I have an excuse! (signed: Epstein's mom)

Michelle and I are fortunate enough to have some wonderful friends and neighbors. One in particular is gracious enough to invite us for an over night stay at a cabin owned by the company he works for.

This past Saturday we went with four other couples and spent the day riding quads, and drinking and playing cards, and eating!

No, they are not playing hide and seek! LOL! Lisa (our neighbor) and Michelle are watching Lisa's dog dig for moles and are scared to death that she might actually pull one out of the ground!

Headline News

My World is dead...long live My World.

After 49 shows dating back to last March I will no longer be hosting my Internet radio show.

But that is because I am launching a brand new show!

Back in the day I worked in "real" radio with a good friend and we are going to reunite to bring you something a little different on blog talk radio!

Beginning Thursday March 5th at 10pm it will be "Jeff and Glenn @ 10!"

Thirty minutes of talk and all kinds of stuff.

There will still be the "People I Hate" segments, weird news and a lot of the things from My World, but there will also be more interviews, contests, and new features like "Dial a Date" and "Facebook Profile of the week"!

I want to thank the ones who listened and supported my little folly for the past year and I also want to encourage you to listen to the new show starting in March!

One of the very first contests we are running was announced last night:

The Limerick Show!

For the next month we want YOU dear reader to send us your favorite limericks. Actually we want you to read them for us! Send an audio file, post it to YouTube, brings us a copy personally...we don't care!

Over the next few days I will post links to YouTube and Daily Motion where you can post your videos and emails where you can send the audio files.

If you need some technical support just drop one of us a line and we'll do what we can.

The best ones will be compiled for the show on April 2nd (one day past April Fools Day) and played back!

Not much to say other than about half way into this we decided to hire someone to do the rest of the house! LOL!

Basically it took about two hours of prep, two hours to prime and four hours painting two coats.

Everything done in about a day though and Josh loves his new room!

The sports theme was his idea and he got a lot of the stuff for Christmas.

Before I get around to posting up the pictures of the room we painted and redecorated for our son I wanted to make an important public service announcement:

Do not paint without shoes on!

A couple years ago I painted our basement door. Simple enough task, right?

Well I was using spray paint on a metal door. It was a nice summer day. I wore my sandals. (For the record I HATE wearing shoes and socks.)

The result was a nicely painted door and this:

I'll the story of the scar some other time.

So anyway...do you now hard it is to scrub paint off your feet? It alternately hurts and tickles like heck!

Fast forward almost two years and we are painting Josh's room.

Maybe I should have told Michelle about my past adventure?

Of course she would have been fine if her "bull in a china shop" husband hadn't kept spilling paint everywhere!

And I don't have enough room on my digital camera to take pictures of all the places I got it all over myself!

Did I mention that we are looking into hiring a painter for the rest of the house?

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Brett Favre is retiring...again.

The rest of the talking heads can have fun making jokes and comparing Brett to the all-time greats.

I wanted to share this little tid-bit that I heard some time ago.

Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons originally.

You didn't know that?

Maybe because he only threw four passes his entire time there. His first one for a TD...scored by the opposing defense who pick-sixed him.

So after than inglorious start Favre was traded to the Green Bay Packers.

But the interesting part of the trade was the physical.

It seems Farve had the same condition that ended the football career of Bo Jackson and the GM of the Packers took him anyway.

Farve ended up starting a record 269 consecutive starts in the NFL!

For all his other records and accomplishments I personally feel that has to take the cake!

So say what you will about the retirement drama and everything that happened last season...the guy is/was amazing.

Birthday

Another one! LOL!

Today my one and only Godchild turns seven years old!

Alex is the first born of my only sister.

Really, when you think about it being a Godparent is quite the accomplishment.

It means that someone ELSE thinks you are going to be good enough to raise THEIR kid if anything ever happens to them! LOL!

When my grandmother passed away a few years ago I met my mother's Godfather at the funeral home. I told him that my mother (then in her 50's) was now his responsibility. I mean does your responsibility ever end? Am I going to be responsible for Alex when he's older?

That's a lot of pressure!

Still all of my nieces and nephews are a treasure to me. Each has their own unique personality and bring something different into my life as I am sure they do for their own parents.

Super Bowl Shuffle

Six-burgh!

Call it what you want it was a finish for the ages and a game that no Steeler fan will forget!

First things first...the Cardinals played one heck of a game and if they had won it would have been fair and square. Their history may not be much (no championships since 1947) but they have some classy players and a good coaching staff.

Now on to celebrating!

First (again) the records:

Mike Tomiln becomes the youngest coach in a Super Bowl and the youngest coach to WIN a Super Bowl!

The Steelers (who were the first team to win four super bowls) become the only team to win SIX Super Bowls. For perspective here: The Steelers have one 6 of the 43 games played...13%. Fifteen teams in the league have NEVER won a Super Bowl.

James Harrison set a record with the longest play in the history of the Super Bowl. A rumbling 100 YARD INTERCEPTION RETURN FOR A TOUCHDOWN!!!!

Now the fun stuff:

What a game! For the last Super Bowl the Steelers were in I was so nervous I couldn't even drink!

This time I was more relaxed and with a 17-7 half time lead and the Cardinals looks unworthy it was a fun time!

Then things got out of hand...quickly.

My main thought as the Cardinals scored the go ahead touchdown? Man the Larry Fitzerald is fast!!!

So with just over two minutes left I was hanging head and ready to give up. Something I have never done during the playoffs.

I went to the bathroom and as I was looking the mirror I could not process the thought that the Steelers might lose! It couldn't happen!

I started asking for some sort of miracle.

I started talking to people I knew were on the other side to pull some strings!

Anything!

And they did it! The Steelers drove down the field and won the game!

Of course I though it might have cost me my soul...until I realized that there were probably a lot of other people doing the same thing!

I just hope there was someone else they wanted more than me!

So the celebration went long in to the night and we Steeler fans will bask in it for quite some time!

How long, you ask?

As a Steeler fan I can say that we will believe in our team until they eliminated next season...when and IF that happens!

Congratulations Steelers and thank you for ANOTHER great season!

This week it was Billy Squire leading off the show!

Loads of football talk as I am AMPED about the Steelers going for their record 6th Super Bowl win!

So naturally I played a lot of Steeler stuff. Pittsburgh fans love their team and they love to sing about them too!

One song I did NOT play, but I wanted to link anyway because it is good and the kids who sing it are 11 and 12 years old!

We did our LOST update and I'll try to be more concise next week but there was a lot of football stuff to talk about!

Black Ice

So here's an interesting story!

Yesterday it warmed all the way up to 38 degrees here and rained.

Later in the day a cold front blew through and the temperature dropped 10 degrees in an hour. In fact all the wet roads and surfaces froze over pretty quickly.

Driving home I was very careful even though its only about a 5 minute trip.

As I approached the turn to my road I had to come to a full stop due to on coming traffic. Unfortunately I started to slide a little and actually went PAST the turn.

Luckily the only other car behind me was also be very careful and was a good ways behind me...or so I thought.

I looked into my rear view mirror in time to see his car sliding right at my bumper!

Note: Michelle and I had been discussing earlier in the day how happy we were that we were about to make our LAST PAYMENT ON THE TRUCK!!!!

To continue: The vehicle behind me continued to slide toward me so I tried to move over give him so room and he ended up sliding sideways into a drainage ditch. Just his rear passenger side tire...but enough that he was stuck good.

I circled back around and made sure the people in the car were OK and they assured me they were and they were going to call for a chain and a truck to get pulled out.

30 minutes later we were still on the road.

Fortunately two good things happened:

1) A PennDot truck came by. The driver stopped to see what happened and spread a large amount of ash in front of the car to help him get traction when he got pulled.

2) A man who lived within five minutes of here said he would be back with a chain to pull the car out.

While waiting (outside in the wind and cold) ANOTHER car started to spin out and head toward the stuck vehicle!

Fortunately two good things happened:

1) The driver of the truck coming the other way saw what was happening and had the good driving skills to swing down a side road and miss the on coming car.

2) When the sliding car went sideways he hit the ash and stopped! He drove away probably considering himself very lucky!

A few minutes later our good Samaritan showed up and in a few minutes the care was free and no damage was done.

The guy with the chain would not take any money. "Its what Americans do for each other." He said. Seriously.

Then we find out the guy who was stuck was leaving for a tour in Iraq this morning!

We both shook his hand and I told him that I hope he was safer there than he was on the road last night!

And we all went our separate ways.

Kind of restores your faith in fellow man to see how many people stopped to check on the car and the people inside.

Baby, Baby

Yesterday was our daughter's 11th birthday!

Here is her story:

We had been married for just under a year when we found out my wife was pregnant. She had taken a test but didn't want to say anything to me until she was sure so she took another...and another. Three tests later we were pretty sure!

Our families were elated! This would be the first grandchild for both sides and we knew we were going to a a spoiled brat!

Everything went as you would expect and we were enjoying getting ready for our first child.

Unfortunately my wife started having some problems with her blood pressure. We learned this was due to pre-eclampsia (which reared its ugly head with our second child also).

With no history to go by the doctors were cautious, but optimistic.

However at 5 month my wife was put on bed rest. A couple weeks later she was in the hospital and and week after that I got the call.

I was working for a rental company at the time and my wife called from her room to tell me that they wanted to transfer her to another hospital because the baby seemed sluggish.

After calming her down I left to make my deliveries for the day with the intention of going Pittsburgh to see her that evening.

I had not even made it to my first stop when my mobile phone rang and a doctor on the other end was telling me that baby's heart rate was low and they were going to do an emergency c-section and they would NOT be waiting for me to get there!

On my way back to the store to get my car my parents called to inform me they were going to visit my wife. I informed THEM that she would not be in her room as they were taking the baby now!

I had never been to Magee's but made great time on the trip!

I found my parents in the waiting room and my dad took me to the nurse's station so I could find out what was going on.

The nurse told me that my wife was fine, but still in the emergency room. While I was trying to get all the information processed my dad was behind me asking about the baby. The nurse wouldn't answer him and it took me a few minutes to hear him and I asked about our daughter. i was told she was being taken care of and we could see her soon.

She had come three months early at a length of 12 inches and a weight of 1 pound 11 1/2 ounces!

I got to see my wife and I had never seen so many wires and tubes connected to a person who was awake!

She ended up in the intensive care unit for 24 hours.

I was able to see Veronica (I didn't want to call her "Roni" but even the nurses did for that very first day!) withing a few hours.

She was small and red and I didn't know how she was alive!

It was over the next three months that we learned all you would ever want to know about preemie's and their care and survival.

Girls are stronger than boys.

The less time they are on a respirator the better off they are.

Babies have a tiny hole in their heart that closes before birth...preemie's are not closed yet.

They like to be touched...but not stroked.

The list goes on and on!

Roni was given a medicine to close the hole in her heart. If it did not work they would do another and then surgery would be a last option. the first dose worked.

She had been on the respirator for a few weeks when I told her as we were leaving from visiting one night that it had been long enough and she should start breathing on her own. That night we called to check on her and the nurse informed us that she had pulled the tube out on her own and was breathing fine! (Probably the last time she listened to me and did what I told her without whining I should add!!! LOL!)

We went through the training of how to bath her and hold her and dress her and wondered how parent brought a baby right home without all the lessons!

We watched as she had IV's placed in veins in her head because all the other ones had been used.

We transferred her to TIC so she could grow and get big enough to finally come home!Veronica the day she came home in April of 1998!

Through it all we never doubted that she would fine.

So far so good!

Roni is great in school, has a fantastic personality and is involved in many activities!

We were blessed that everything worked out so well for us. Twice.

Despite her believing that she is already a teenager i don't know how we could ever have been the same without her!

And despite the fact that she acts too much like I did when I was her age!

So I am the proud father of a pre-teen! How did that happen?!?!

But I am proud and I know my wife is too and I know the Veronica is special...because I saw her grow into what she is today from that cold day in January 11 years ago.

Look, would you people do me a favor?

If for some, person reason you are unable to drive the posted speed limit will STAY THE HECK OFF THE ROADS!!!

If I have to follow one more person leading their own personal parade through the back roads of my county I may have do something drastic!

I understand that some older folks feel more comfortable driving slower...perhaps they would feel even MORE comfortable after they PULLED OVER AND LET THE 20 CARS BEHIND THEM PASS!!!

And in foul weather a good many people want to be safe...and the safest thing for them to do is TO STAY THE HECK HOME!!!

Honest to goodness people...if the sign says 45 then do at least that. If you can't then get out of the way. You must not be any hurry anyway!

Oh, and to all you people who drive in the passing lane on the highway? The ones who are in the left lane long enough to declare residency? THE SAME GOES FOR YOU!!!!

Pull over!! If you are passing someone even slower than you (as if) then DO IT! And then PULL OVER!!

And if you are trying to keep ME from speeding? Well until they give you a badge and a siren YOU ARE NOT THE PROTECTOR OF THE SPEED LIMIT!

Its not even that I speed! I just want to get around the slower traffic and some moron is coasting along in the left lane for 100 miles while a trail of cars get caught behind them.

Of course George Carlin can explain it better than I ever could.

Nothing on but the radio...

Jet kicked off the show tonight and then it was on to football talk!

My favorite team is headed to the big game and lots of fans have great songs out about them!

Then we talked about the inauguration and the cult of Obama. Namely how some on the right have fogotten their deifying of President Regan. No links...just my opinions. Listen to the show for more.

Weird news!

1) A prophet claims the world will end before President Obama is sworn in...um, wait a minute...

2) The vatican changes its mind on something! Only 400 years in the making!

3) A bus driver won't drive his bus because it claims there might not be a God. God refuses to comment.

No specific novelty song this week but a couple football related clips from Mr. Bill Cosby.

Does anything else really matter?!?!

I spent the first two season trying to solve all the mysteries...and then it hit me: Just relax and enjoy the ride.

It is one of the best written and presented shows on televsion and I am going to enjoy every minute of it!

In fact my goal is too live to see how it all ends!

Hail To The Chief

Today was a very important day in our collective history as a country.

Today, for just the 44th time, a person has been sworn in to lead the United States of America.

I'm not going to provide links to the coverage or the speech because if you found this little out of the way blog you can surely find those, but I do want to put my two cents in.

I know a lot of you don't like President Obama.

Some people do not like his politics.

Some do not like the fact that he is a democrat.

Some do not like the fact that he is black. Yes you are out there...I work with some of you.

But you cannot deny the fact that it is STILL an amazing event to watch.

One man...chosen by a majority of the voters in this country to lead us for the next four years.

I certainly do not want that job! LOL!

Give him a chance. One person cannot change the world.

All politicians promise to do the best they can and all politicians have to deal with others who oppose their view. But I've already seen posts wondering why President Obama hasn't done anything yet!

It takes time and he inherited a really bad load of stuff to deal with.

Not everyone will be happy. Not now, not ever.

But you will get to voice your dissatisfaction in just under four years...if you choose to vote then.

Until then relax and enjoy the moment.

A moment that speaks to the freedom we have in this country.

We can agree to disagree...compromise is one of the tenants this country was built upon.

I know I'll disagree with some decisions...but only time will tell.

And for those of you celebrating that President Bush is now gone? Time will tell for him too.

Feel free to speak your minds...that is another great thing about the US of A!

But at least take a deep breath first and let the history of the moment sink in before you started yelling and screaming again.

Happy Birthday

Just wanted to take a second to say happy birthday to my dad.

Dad with his dad around 1946 and his mother in 1945.

(I wanted to post this over the weekend but couldn't find the attached video!)

After graduating from high school in 1963 he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam war.

Returning to the states he met and married my mother in 1968.

Several jobs and years later we still rely on him as much as we did as kids.

Dad will probably not retire any time soon. He has no real hobbies and all the grand kids will be in school in another couple years.

But he does more for our families then we can ever hope to repay him for!

A rare discussion of current events included that plane that crashed into the Hudson River just today. How can it be a miracle that all those people survived when flying is supposed to so much safer than anything else like they tell us?

Then we got a great novelty/comedy song from Aaron Wilburn!

Some weird news for the week:

1) Always a bridesmaid? Hell she's usually a pall-bearer!
2) why do people think its OK to to be rude to fat people?
3) Adolph Hitler was taken from his parents...last week.

Don't Panic!

"I don't' get ulcers...I'm a carrier!"

That used to be a motto I lived by.

Not so much over the past few years as I have gotten older and had more things to worry about.

But for the past month I have really tried to live by that creed. And more recently I have defined it even more: Don't panic.

Panicking is NEVER good. Whether its a work, while driving or when drowning!

There is always room for anger and elation and frustration but you should never panic.

When you panic you make bad decisions that are rushed...and those will usually just lead to more bad decisions down the road.

After repeating this to several people over the past week or so I had a revelation. I had heard this somewhere else before.

Then it hit when when I woke up Saturday: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

Douglas Adams tome on the destruction of the Earth and space travel (OK, its more than that...lol) put those words into my subconscious back in 1986 when I read the first book in the four book trilogy and there are even more true today.

Don't panic.

Two simple words that have allowed me to be more relaxed and to make better decisions.

Don't panic.

Try it...it works.

I was to post this yesterday (1/9/2009) but circumstances entirely within my control (you read that correctly) stopped it from happening so here we go...

Friday was my son's 7th birthday and here is his story.

My wife and I went through some tough times in the year 2000, but by May of 2001 we had worked out a lot of our differences and were moving on. Michelle had decided to go back to school and get her degree. To that end she enrolled at Penn State Fayette and was start classes in September. We had also decided to wait to have another (2nd) child until she completed her studies.

Not long after classes started we were sitting at the dinner table when Michelle said she had a craving for an banana split.

I told her that if she had said any other word other than "craving" I would have let it go...but I had a feeling she was pregnant.

I told her I was going to get a pregnancy test and she told me in no uncertain terms to NOT go get one while she was at class.

So when she got home the tests were sitting on the sink in our bathroom.

(As a side note I bought two tests, because when Michelle was pregnant with our daughter she took three to be sure! LOL!)

Seeing the tests Michelle told me she would take it just to shut me up about the whole being pregnant thing.

Several minutes later she told me I'd better come and look at the test.

Yes, she was pregnant.

Our first child was born premature (at six months) due to preeclampsia so Michelle's doctors were very careful and monitored her blood pressure and weight gains closely.

For the first six months there were no problems and we thought everything would go smoothly this time.

Then one Sunday we were sitting around waiting to go to our nieces birthday party when Michelle got an awful headache. A check of her blood pressure showed it was very high and we went straight to the emergency room.

There was a bad snow storm that day and it took awhile to get all the tests done being a weekend, but her doctor decided to not full around and send her to a hospital in Pittsburgh (where our daughter as born also) just in case the baby had to come early.

The following Wednesday, January 9, 2002, I went to visit Michelle and found her throwing up. The nurse on hand said she had been sick all day. Eventually the doctors decided that it was a result of the pregnancy and preeclampsia and the only way to stop the problem was to take the baby early.

We both agreed and were moved to one of the birthing areas in the hospital.

Several hours passed as doctors were in and out and forms were signed, but at 10:10pm Joshua Daniel Heller was born at a weight of 2 pounds 10 ounces and a length of 12 inches!

He cried when he was born (I was in the room) and he looked a lot like me but they whisked him away to check his viability and to take care of Michelle.

The next morning (I had slept in a chair in the hospital room next to Michelle that night) a nurse came in and became concerned by Michelle's vitals.

Her blood pressure was low and she was very pale.

She was taken to the ICU and I was asked to leave the room so the doctors could do their thing. The keys to my car and my cell phone were still in the room so I was a man with no where to go and no information on what was going on with my wife and child.

For the next several hours I was not allowed in to the ICU, no doctor would tell me what was happening and I also could not get in to see our son in the NICU.

I wondered why people were staring at me as I wandered around the hospital...I finally looked in a mirror in the restroom and realized that my lack of sleep and crying had made my eyes blood red and I had the look of a crazy person!

Finally I was told that Michelle's liver was bleeding into the thin film that surrounds it. Our options were to wait until the surgeon came in the next day or transfer her to another facility across town right now.

We opted for the quickest surgery possible and she was then moved to the next hospital where surgery was performed that evening. She remembers nothing after Josh was born until a day or so after the surgery.

Four days later she was sent home.

Three months after that Josh came home. We had two months in the NICU and one month at TIC just like we had with his sister.

Although he had a tougher time than his sister did with his lungs he only came home with a need for an oxygen tank and he was done with that withing two months.

When I a child is born premature there are many things that go wrong...and we have been blessed with two children who seem to have zero side effects from their ordeal and for that we are eternally grateful!

So here we are seven years later and Josh is in first grade and doing very well.

It amazes me how much faster time goes when you are watching someone else grow up.

Lots of football to talk about as my Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing to play the San Diego Chargers in the playoffs this Sunday!

Also I bitched a lot about work. Its good to vent!

Our novelty song this week was about an unfortunate brick layer and his request for a day off.

In weird news:
1) Nipples are bad on facebook.
2) Golf can damage your hearing?
3) She's a man, baby!
4) A divorce settlement that gonna REALLY hurt!

The Name of the Game

Just a quick update tonight about Dartball.

Dartball?

Yes, Dartball.

Its a game where you thrown wooden #2 darts from 25 feet at a board that looks like a baseball field.

You can hit singles, doubles, triples, home runs, errors,. sacrifices, double plays, foul balls, strikes, balls.

Teams made up of a minimum of 6 men play three games every Monday night from September to May!

Some leagues are different with different boards and drinking.

I have been playing in a church league since I was 13 years old.

The league itself was started in 1953!

Its a fun game and I get to spend time with my dad since he's been playing one year more than me.

As I've said before genealogy and history are a big interest of mine.

When looking through old newspapers I am sometimes taken a back at the overt racism that was so prevalent even in the early 20th century.

Here are a couple examples.

Well its a quiet day here at the homestead and all the Christmas decorations have been put away.

We start decorating the house for Halloween, then Thanksgiving, THEN Christmas!

I enjoy it, but its kind of nice to have the house back to "normal" after the hustle and bustle of the Holidays.

So since everything is put away I guess its time to post some pictures from Christmas!

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday season so far!

In order to continue that I present a list of superstitions associated with the first day of the new year!

One that I keep is being the first dark haired man to enter people's home. Its supposed to bring good luck to the homeowner and I will continue to do for as long as I have any dark hair left on my head! LOL!

Whatever your beliefs lets hope for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009 for each and every one of us!

For a real life example see the New England Patriots.

Last season they were caught red handed bending the rules to video tape signals from opposing teams.

Their "genius" coach said he just misunderstood the rules. The rules that had been clearly and recently reinforced by the league before the beginning of the season.

Based on the the investigation by the NFL the team was fined and so was the "genius".

The Patriots used the motivation from their being disrespected (?) to drive to an 18-0 record only to have their perfect season (and lots of t-shirts and books) ruined by the NY Giants in the Super Bowl.

Fast forward to this season.

The first half of the first quarter of the first game and Tom Brady goes out with a season ending injury.

In come Matt Cassel...who has not started a football game since he was in high school.

And the Patriots, with the easiest schedule in the entire NFL start winning without Brady.

Beating up on weaker teams and Cassel suddenly throwing the ball like he knows what he's doing the Patriots are suddenly not only in contention for the playoffs but could win their division!

Cassel has back to back 400+ yard games (ended when he met the Steelers) and the Patriots finish with a four game winning streak!

All the Patriots needed was a loss by Baltimore or the Dolphins.

New England watched as the Ravens killed the Jaguars.

The Jets hosted the Dolphins.

And lost.

Karma.

The Patriots become the first team since 1985 to have an 11 win season and NOT make the playoffs.

Karma.

Matt Cassel is an unrestricted free-agent and the Patriots are going to have to either throw a lot of money at him or franchise him and hope some other team is desperate enough to make it worth their while.

Karma.

The genius is home watching the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

Weclome to the Jungle...

I belong to a LOT of online sites.

Some of my favorites are the sports sites and one in particular is ran by the sad sack Cincinnati Bengals.

Their message board is a clever mix of smack talk and "jungle noise" where fans can argue even with people they agree with most of the time.

But recently there has been a trend to the smack talk. Since the Bengals can win on their won their fans are taking great pride in rooting for whoever beats the Steelers.

And the great mantra that goes up around this time each year: "Yeah, well, your team might have made the playoffs, but they'll be one and done!"

Recently I responded to those "one and done" Steeler haters:

My philosophy is this..just get to the payoffs and anything can happen.

Look at 2005. The Steelers had to bust their hind ends to get in the playoffs and went on a tear that lead them to their 5th Lombardi trophy.

Last year as the Steelers were limping into the playoffs I was at least help to hold out some hope because at least they made it. As they dropped that game to Jacksonville my wife, who is a newcomer to watching football, said well at least you won't have to worry about next week.

She couldn't have been more wrong.

Win that game against Jacksonville and anything can happen the following week.

So to everyone here who will take great pleasure if the Steelers lose in the playoffs...your jealousy is what I love!

Getting to the playoffs is just half the battle...but getting there allows you to play on. Something fans of the Bengals don't have much memory of.

We have a great time getting together to watch Steeler games!

Win or lose it is always an adventure!

I never liked to get with other people to watch a football game because I tend to get loud and upset when the team I am rooting for is doing poorly.

But for the last three years a group of us have been taking turns hosting the games and its turned into great fun.

However the best place so far is at my in-laws house.

They have the best set up in their basement with a full-sized bar, dart board, big screen television (with speakers even in the bathroom!), a pool table...its a great place to watch a game!

Not that this is an earth-shattering revelation to anyone but I thought I should at least thank them for putting up with all of us most of the time!

Family Tradition

Whew!

Last Christmas party of the year is over!

Now we still have to get together with family on Christmas Eve and then the other side of the family on Christmas Day...but no more parties!

I love getting together with everyone and the more the merrier...but I'm worn out!

We didn't have Christmas "parties" growing up. All the relatives would come to my Grandmother's house on Christmas Eve and then Christmas morning after all the gifts were opened we would ride from relative to relative visiting (in the back of a car with no seat belts by the way)!

Now we have one for work, one for the neighborhood, one for the extended family on one side...I love them but I'm glad its over.

Until New Year's Eve.

I wonder who decided that we need to ring in the next second in the continuous flow of time with a big party?!?!

2) A teacher says there is no Santa!

Don't worry, Be Happy

I am a worrier.

As you could read in the last post I probably worry too much.

I thinks its the influence of my Italian mother and grandmother!

But I'm going to try to stop...really.

I wasn't always this way though. In fact I used to be the most laid back guy you could ever meet. Nothing ever got me excite and I just cruised through life.

In fact I often said that I never got ulcers...I was a carrier!

But in the last 15-20 years I have started to worry about everything:

money
kids
life
death
the weather
making lists...lol

So how do you STOP thinking about how things could go wrong?

I'm not entirely sure...but I'm going to try...really.

Anyone have any suggestions?!?!
